If you haven’t read it already, here is part 1! Based on the awesome feedback we received from all you adventurous New Jerseyans, we’ve done a bit of research and digging into six more of the most creepy, unexplained places of the Garden State. We can’t say why it seems like you guys have terrifying locations everywhere, and at this point we’re not brave enough to question it. So, without further ado, here they are:
1. Shades of Death Road/Ghost Lake
This two lane rural road in central Warren County is the subject of countless local legends and horror stories, ranging from brutal murders and kidnappings to countless fatal car crashes. Many people have reported seeing ghosts, abnormal apparitions, and other strange sightings along the road. Ghost Lake, near the end of the roadway, often is said to have a strange light above it, even at night.
2. Atco/The Atco Ghost
Supposedly haunted by the ghost of a young boy who was killed in a hit and run accident, local legend says that by honking your horn you will see the young boy chasing after the ball that killed him in life. From Rick in the comments section: “…and we turned back to go back down burnt mill road and this very bright glowing white figure ( clear as day it was a kid no more then 3 1/2 ft tall in a white tee and red shorts with short brown hair n he was literally glowing he was so bright white) comes Zooming at us from the darkness”. Creepy story Rick, thanks for sharing.
3. Marlboro Mental Institution
Marlboro mental institution was mentioned by several commentators on part 1, and based on their descriptions it definitely qualifies as a creepy place. Location in Marlboro township, the institution open in 1931 and was one of the biggest mental hospitals in the country. Local legends center around the suicides of many of the patients at this hospital, as well as a murderous farmer who used the hospital’s slaughterhouse for his twisted crimes. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the hospital is set to be completely torn down by the end of 2015.
4. The Pine Barrens/Jersey Devil
There are many fascinating stories about the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The oldest local legend may be that of the Jersey Devil, a supposed winged creature which lives in the deep recesses of the forest. Combine that with the stories of mobster graves, mass murders, and other ghostly creatures and you can see why it’s a place best seen during the day.
5. “Kill Yourself” Bridge
This bridge is located in the Sayreville area off Bordentown Ave. We had never heard about this one until it was mentioned in the comments, but reading through the story of what happened here is truly chilling. A young man, right before taking his own life, wrote in spraypaint “Kill yourself” in large lettering. We weren’t able to verify how true this story was, but the pictures made our skin crawl and are worthy of mention.
Located in Mount Holly, this old prison is supposedly one of the most haunted places in the world. It’s rumored that there are various ghostly figures here, including a legless man that floats through the front lawn and tortured screams that can be heard on the 3rd floor. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at this extremely creepy youtube video that was recorded here:
So, once again thank you to all the New Jersey residents who helped us make this list. Did we miss anything? Is there any other supernatural/paranormal/just plain creepy sites that are worth a visit?
