“Graham-Hughes 2” by Graham Hughes – Own work.
This is the story of Graham Hughes, a British filmmaker who was the first person in recorded history to travel to every country on earth without the use of a single airplane. When you think about the actual logistics of a trip of that nature, it’s mind boggling. I whined the last time my flight was delayed for two hours, now I’m thinking about waiting 16 hours for a boat cross the Pacific – seems to put my own travel problems into perspective.
The trip took 1,426 days and over 160,000 miles, with Graham often surviving on just dollars a day.
Wondering what that looks like on a passport? Well, Mr. Hughes went through four different passports on his trips, and shared pictures of all his visas and stamps.
Most frequently asked about his budget for his trip, Graham tried to budget about 100$…A week! Insane.
His story really is an incredible example of the power travel has to change perspectives. Often asked about countries that many people perceive as the most dangerous or hardest to get to, Graham responded: “”People asked me how I was going to get to Afghanistan or Iraq or North Korea, but they were the easy ones, you don’t even need a visa for Iraq, you just walk across from the border in Turkey.”
